Volunteer opportunities abound

Since 1976 when a courageous group of people in Tasmania joined together to stop the flooding of the Franklin River in Tasmania’s south-west wilderness, volunteers have been the life-force of our campaigns.

Over 30 years, thousands of Australians have helped to protect millions of hectares of irreplaceable wilderness around the country.

The Wilderness Society’s strength and success are largely thanks to the passion and commitment of volunteers.  The Wilderness Society is community-based - and open to everyone.

Volunteering is a great way to gain experience, have fun, learn new skills, make friends - and change the world.

There are many ways you can contribute, including:

  • Coordinating Stalls and Events
  • Participating at stalls and events
  • Assisting with Research and Development
  • Helping in the office with administration work
  • Helping out with IT skills
  • Designing banners, posters, flyers, website design or newsletter layouts
  • Helping with public outreach as a public speaker
  • Media & Promotions Assistant

These are just a few examples of how you might be able to help. If you have specific skills and ideas to contribute, talk to our campaign staff today.

As little as a few hours a week helps a lot. Find out about exciting volunteer opportunities in your state:

My volunteer story - Vanessa Culliford

"I became a Wilderness Society Volunteer at the start of 2006.

I visited the Melbourne Campaign Centre and was greeted by some friendly and enthusiastic campaigners who were organising a massive rally in Melbourne.

There was plenty to do - painting banners, creating fliers, letter boxing - the vibe and team spirit was amazing.

I spent the next 8 months helping out in the campaign centre in any way I could.  Things I didn’t know how to do, I was shown - building up my skills as I went along.  Mistakes were made but hectares were protected, so it all evened out in the end.

It was wonderful to be surrounded by passionate people - all working together to protect wilderness areas.  I have learnt so much since joining the team at The Wilderness Society.

Now I’m fortunate enough to be a paid Community Campaigner for The Wilderness Society in Newcastle. I leap from my bed every day and think to myself “Hurrah, I get to go to work today”.

We always have opportunities for volunteers at The Wilderness Society.
