Energy giant Stanwell put on notice over 'green' energy plans
The Wilderness Society and the Queensland Greens today staged a peaceful demonstration outside the Brisbane headquarters of energy giant, Stanwell. The demonstration is in response to reports that Stanwell is considering purchasing native forest timber to burn to generate so called 'green' energy.
"Our groups fully support attempts by coal burning power companies to find environmentally benign sources of energy generation such as solar and wind power, however, if companies like Stanwell think that burning forests is a preferable solution, they are badly misguided."
Burning native forests for energy production is a key recommendation of a radical plan prepared by the Queensland Timber Board and the Australian Workers Union to dramatically increase native forest logging in south east Queensland.
"Stanwell has tried hard to promote itself as a environmentally responsible corporate citizen. However, if Stanwell goes down this path and provides an economic justification to increase logging in native forests in south east Queensland, these efforts will come to a screeching halt."
