WildCountry update
Working closely with government, community and Indigenous groups, WildCountry aims to find the best long-term solutions to protect and restore our natural world, while developing sustainable economic activities that benefit the local community as well as the environment.
Recent developments include:
- becoming the first not-for-profit environment organisation who, in partnership with the Australian National University, receive funding from Australia’s most prestigious scientific research body, the Australian Research Council. Together with the WildCountry Science Council, we will be exploring many of the critical conservation questions needed to underpin the development of a new conservation planning framework for Australia
- a promise of ten million dollars from the Queensland Government towards the world heritage listing of Cape York Peninsula
- a proposal by the South Australian Government to protect half a million hectares of the Yellabinna wilderness – a key first step in the implementation of our South Australian Western Wilderness work
- a Cooperation Agreement (Click to read, PDF) between the Chuulangun Aboriginal Corporation and The Wilderness Society, with Kaanju Traditional Owners on ‘Country’ on Cape York Peninsula and the development of a clear action plan for improved protection and restoration of Country

WildCountry and its supporters are making great progress towards our vision for the long-term health of the environment, wildlife and people of Australia.
Every day, WildCountry’s work becomes more and more urgent, particularly in the context of drought and global climate change.
Together, we will work towards a positive future with healthy connections between land, people and wildlife – where humanity thrives in compatible partnership with nature.
