Forever Wild event - July 27, 2008 - Abbotsford Convent, Melbourne
On Sunday July 27, 2008 supporters, members and volunteers joined The Wilderness Society staff at the beautiful, historical Convent in Abbotsford, to enjoy our WildCountry photo exhibition, kindly donated by a selection of well known wildlife and wilderness photographers.
Thank you to all our supporters who are considering remembering wilderness in their Will and came along to learn how crucial it is to plan for the future of our planet for our children, grandchildren, wilderness and wildlife.
During the afternoon Gavan MacFadzean, our Victorian Campaign Coordinator, gave an overall presentation on the journey that lead The Wilderness Society from our traditional campaigns towards a more scientific, holistic approach across the country, WildCountry. This presentation gives our supporters a clear view of our long term vision for Australia’s environment and how we plan to achieve it.
Felicity Wishart, our National Strategic Development Coordinator then gave us a detailed presentation on the crucial role forest’s play in the climate change equation in reducing dangerous amounts of carbon in the atmosphere and an outline of the recently released Green Carbon report. The report high light’s that the world’s forests are a much greater carbon absorption sponge than was originally thought. With this new science, it is apparent that protecting the world’s forests is the cheapest, quickest and easiest way to reduce the amount of atmospheric carbon, hence reducing the effects of climate change.
The purpose of these events is to allow supporters who may be considering leaving a gift in their Will to find out all about The Wilderness Society, become informed on major campaigns and to have a clearer picture of what their bequest will be directly contributing towards.
It is always a pleasure to meet our fantastic, passionate supporters and members at these events, as we are well aware that the supporters are the backbone of The Wilderness Society and without them we would not be able to achieve our goal’s of protecting Australia’s valuable wilderness areas.
