These leggy birds are best known for their ecstatic dancing. Bang up for shaking their booty, they're frequently seen shaking and shimmying, splaying their wings, pirouetting and jumping up to a metre in the air. Show offs!
The Brolga partners for the long term, not just flings. When a Brolga has found their mate they have eyes only for each other. Utterly romantic, yeah?
Sadly, these faithful birds are a threatened species in the south of Australia, with no more than 1,000 remaining. They face local extinction in some regions as a result of wetland loss, feral animals such as foxes, and historic shooting and poisoning campaigns.
We need your help to protect wetlands such as the Lower Murray Lakes and Coorong in South Australia, and red gum forests in New South Wales - before the Brolga dance becomes a mournful waltz.
You can help keep the Brolgas and their loved-up ways going strong! Recently, thanks to support from people like you, 95,000 hectares of Murray River wetland in Victoria was protected in January 2009.
