As you stare into your lovers eyes, spare a thought for the Fairy Penguin. The smallest of the world's 17 penguins (a.k.a. Little Penguin), these diminutive sweethearts pair up for life and experience their lives together - forever. When it comes to gender equality, these guys are ahead of the pack. Parents share nest-building duties and take it in turns to bring home the bacon (well, fish) while their partner minds the kids.
Intrepid travellers, Fairy Penguins have been known to venture far beyond the waters surrounding their home. One couple tagged on Victoria's Phillip Island have made a 1,000km journey north to join Sydney's North Harbour colony. Quite impressive when you're around 30cm tall and weigh only a kilogram!
Sadly, Fairy Penguins and their long-term loves are threatened by a range of human-related activities. The North Harbour population is at high risk, with only around 60 pairs surviving. Erosion, oil pollution, discarded plastic products and feral animals have all caused a decline in numbers.
Give your special someone a Fairy Penguin and your gift of love will be contributing to The Wilderness Society's work including the protection of Australia's coastal environment. By helping to secure more protected areas we can give these loving Fairy Penguins the best chance of survival.
When you buy a Wild Gift of Love you can show your loved one how much you care – about them and the planet.
On your behalf we will send your special someone a Wild E-Card of Love showing how their wild gift really matters. You can also print a card to give to your love one. After entering your payment details, the card will be available for you to download as a pdf.
And because all the gifts in our Wild Gifts of Love range are tax deductible, you will receive a tax receipt in the mail.
Your Wild Gift of Love’ will go towards The Wilderness Society's work to protect our environment including the campaign your gift represents.
For example, by giving a Brolga you will be supporting our campaign to protect the Brolga’s precious wetland habitats across Australia’s south. With your help, wild places and the creatures that call them home – some of which are under serious threat – will have the best chance of survival.
In addition, your gift will help tackle climate change, and protect our natural environment and the creatures with whom we share it.
