No dam weir for the Murray

The Wilderness Society is shocked by the Rann Government's recent proposal to put a weir at Wellington on the River Murray.
This will sever the Murray-Darling Basin estuary (the Ramsar listed, internationally significant wetlands of the Lower Murray Lakes and Coorong) from the rest of the river system, starving it of fresh water.
The Coorong, Lake Alexandrina & Lake Albert region was listed on the Ramsar listing of wetlands of international importance on 1 November 1985, and was listing number 321, from a list that now stretches to over 1600 sites of important conservation value worldwide.

If this weir goes ahead it will destroy the estuary, devastate the wildlife and marine life that rely on it, and effectively represent the final nail in the coffin of the River Murray.
The only way to restore the system to health is for the Government to buy back water from the irrigation industry and return it to the river.
You can take action today! Please send a message to SA’s Minister for Water Security asking her to stop the Wellington weir from going ahead and to protect the Murray River's wetlands.
