Our wildlife is facing an extinction crisis as a result of human activity - and climate change is only going to make it more difficult for them to adapt and survive. Your gift of $20 or more can help our campaigns to give our wildlife and marine life a brighter future.

Humpback whale

Protect a whaleHumpback populations are still recovering from the whaling operations that decimated them in the 19th and 20th centuries. Now these majestic, gentle giants are under threat from plans for mining and industrialisation that could destroy nursery grounds off the WA coast, crucial to the world's most significant humpback population.

By protecting a Humpback and calf as a gift from $20, you can help secure a future for our vulnerable humpbacks and the environment they rely on.

Australia's seascape below the surface is larger and more varied and dramatic than our terrestrial landscapes. Canyons, undersea mountains, plateaus and trenches are home to an incredible variety of life. Sadly, overfishing, oil and gas drilling, mining and pollution are destroying marine habitats, leaving them impoverished and on the verge of collapse.

By protecting a humpback whale, you will be contributing to The Wilderness Society's work to protect our environment including our marine campaigns, which are underway across Australia. By helping to secure more marine parks and protected areas we can give our marine environments and creatures - including whales, turtle, dolphins, dugongs, and many others – the best chance of adapting to climate change.

Numbat

Protect a numbatNot only are numbats quirky and cuddly – they also play an important role in keeping termites under control. Their long tongues come in handy, with adults eating as many as 20,000 termites each day!

Over the years, land clearing, foxes, cats, and changed fire regimes have all led to a massive decline in numbat populations – so that they are now confined to small areas of South West WA.

By protecting a numbat for $20 or more, you will be helping to protect WA's Great Western Woodlands, recognised as the largest temperate woodland in the world and potentially one of the numbat's last and best refuges. And you'll be helping to look after 3,500 native plant species and hundreds of animals, as well as the one to two billion tonnes of carbon safely stored in this woodland ecosystem.

The entire Great Western Woodlands region is being degraded by fire, feral animals and weeds. And proposed industrial development threatens to cause far greater damage to this amazing natural area.

By Protecting a Numbat, you will be contributing to The Wilderness Society's work, including our campaign to have the area better protected in conservation reserves. We are also campaigning for immediate funding to undertake on-ground management involving the area's Traditional Owners.

Where the money goes from Wilderness GiftsYour 'Gift to the Wilderness' will go directly towards The Wilderness Society's work to protect our environment including the campaign your gift represents.

For example, through your 'Protecting a Forest' gift you will be supporting our nationwide campaigns to protect and restore Australia's wilderness, including our magnificent and carbon storing forests. With your help, The Wilderness Society works to protect areas that are significant to nature and to our climate – some of which are under serious threat.

Through your 'Protect a Whale' gift, you will be supporting our campaigns, including our Marine campaigns that aim to protect the Humpback Whale calving grounds off the Kimberley coast in Western Australia, and to have more marine protected areas created in South Australia and New South Wales. With your purchase, you can help create marine parks around Australia's coast and protect Australia's amazing marine life from the threat of over-fishing, mining and industrial development.

In addition, your gift will help tackle climate change, and protect our natural environment and the creatures with whom we share it.
