Shoalwater Bay lives another day
The Wilderness Society Inc
Media Release
6 September 2008
The Wilderness Society today congratulated Commonwealth Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, for his strong support for the ongoing protection of the wilderness and wetlands of Shoalwater Bay in central Queensland.
Late yesterday Minister Garrett rejected an application for the establishment of a major coal port and rail line through the Shoalwater wilderness.
Lyndon Schneiders from The Wilderness Society said: “Shoalwater Bay is one Australia's most unique wilderness areas, with stunning sand dunes, over 1000 plant species and an undisturbed marine habitat. It’s a place for nature and future generations, not a port of convenience for the dirty coal industry.
“We have a responsibility as Australians to look after this very special place.
“Minister Garrett should be commended for his strong actions in support of the ongoing protection of this wilderness jewel” concluded Mr Schneiders.
