Toorale station purchase welcomed
The Wilderness Society (Sydney) Inc

11 September 2008
The Wilderness Society today welcomed the purchase of Toorale station by the New South Wales Government with Commonwealth funding assistance.
“The purchase is a significant and much needed step to secure environmental water for the Murray-Darling and Warrego Rivers and a welcome addition to the National Reserve System”, said Cecile van der Burgh, NSW Campaigner for The Wilderness Society.
“We have already congratulated the Deputy Premier and Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, Carmel Tebbutt, on the announcement. But more initiatives like these, where state and federal government work together to holistically protect and manage river and land systems, particularly in western NSW, are critical to ensure our state remains healthy”, she said.
Peter Owen, South Australian Campaign Manager for The Wilderness Society said “this is a good first step but we have a long way to go if we are serious about saving the Lower Lakes and Coorong, the estuary of the Murray Darling basin.
“Toorale station will give all Australians and overseas tourists an opportunity to visit some of the outstanding rivers, wetland and outback landscapes Far Western NSW has to offer,” added Ms van der Burgh
