The Wilderness Society works to secure a strong climate deal

The Wilderness Society is attending the international climate change negotiations that are being held in Bonn, Germany in June to ensure that the next climate deal promotes a safe climate and the protection of the world's biodiverse natural forests.

climate-solution-poster-300.jpgWe will be working to convince the Australian Government to commit to;

  • deep early reductions in greenhouse gas emissions;
  • to protect Australia's native forests as an important climate measure, and;
  • to help developing countries, including our Indonesian neighbours, to protect their natural forests with the support of indigenous and forest dependent communities.

Many countries will be in Bonn working on the draft agreement to take to Copenhagen so it is crucial that they get the details right. We are working to ensure that the protection of the world's biodiverse forests is agreed to, that deforestation and the conversion of native forests to agricultural tree crops is ruled out or at least identified as a significant source of emissions, and that the burning of natural forests for power is not mistaken as a genuine solution to climate change.

The Wilderness Society has made a number of submissions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to the Australian Government and other country representatives. You can view our submissions below.

The Wilderness Society is a founding member of the Ecosystems Climate Alliance (ECA) which is an alliance of environment and social NGOs formed in December 2008. ECA is committed to keeping natural terrestrial ecosystems intact and their carbon out of the atmosphere, in an equitable and transparent way that respects the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.
