From election to action – the environment hits the mainstream
With our major campaigns receiving national media attention over the past few weeks, at the Wilderness Society we’re providing a strong campaign voice as the new Federal Parliament sits for the first time this week.

It has been just over a month since the Federal election that saw a huge rise in the environment voter across the country. In the news this week, our campaigns are grabbing headlines as pressure builds on the minority Labor Government to move into action, and the stakes are high for the environment.
Wild Rivers – As Opposition Leader Tony Abbott prepares to try and overturn Queensland’s historic Wild Rivers legislation, Channel 10’s the 7pm Project and ABC’s The Drum have run features explaining why environmental and Indigenous support for the legislation is necessary and remains strong.
The Sydney Morning Herald has also dedicated some media space to Wild Rivers, saying Indigenous fight over wild rivers likely to turn ugly, and announcing Abbott’s intentions to overturn the legislation.
Over at The Australian, however, News Ltd continue to misrepresent the issues and play down the environmental aspects of Wild Rivers: Senator in rethink on wild rivers law, and turning this serious issue into a game of political football for the Independents: Don’t rush me on wild rivers, Tony Windsor warns
Tillegra Dam – Supporting what environment groups including the Wilderness Society has been saying all along, this Sydney Morning Herald reports the Tillegra Dam on the Williams river is not the best option for addressing the Hunter Region’s long-term water supply – Independent review rejects Tillegra Dam
ABC TV agrees, watch their story on why the Tillegra Dam is not the answer. – Tillegra Dam report calls for other options – ABC TV
Tasmanian Forest Talks – After Gunns Ltd announced an end to native forest logging earlier this month, all eyes are now on the logging company to stick to their promise. Reports that Chainsaws are still chopping down native forests are putting more pressure on the company as talks continue to agree on sustainable solutions. – Chainsaws roar before the peace, SMH.
With all eyes around the nation turning to significant environmental issues, the Wilderness Society is optimistic about the real opportunities available now for our environment.

The cause is not lost- not by a long way. The fight is just starting to amp up, and it is fantastic to see so much support from all over the country.
