At the Bioenergy Australia conference in Fremantle, where Forestry Tasmania is giving a presentation on proposals to burn native forests for electricity, The Wilderness Society is lobbying delegates on the devastating impacts such proposals would have.

A review of the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target (MRET), a policy intended to boost the amount of clean energy in our electricity supply, comprehensively failed to recommend a renewable energy target to the energy industry which would put Australia on a path towards international responsibility on climate change. The Review does however provide the Federal Government with the opportunity to stop the Tasmanian Government from burning its ancient forests for electricity generation.

The Wilderness Society calls on the Australian Labor Party to vote with the Greens and Australian Democrats in the Senate today to overturn controversial sections of the 'Renewable Energy (Electricity) Bill 2000' that promote the burning of native forests (wood waste) to generate energy. The Renewable Energy Bill was intended to require Energy producers to source 2% of electricity from renewable sources by 2010.

Energy giant Stanwell put on notice over 'green' energy plans - September 07, 2003
The Wilderness Society and the Queensland Greens today staged a peaceful demonstration outside the Brisbane headquarters of energy giant, Stanwell. The demonstration is in response to reports that Stanwell is considering purchasing native forest timber to burn to generate so called 'green' energy.
