Christmas Sale – Reflex Paper going cheap, forest homes going forever

Media Release

1 December 2011

Around fifty singing and dancing human Leadbeater’s Possums will this morning visit Santa in Bourke St Mall in protest of the logging of native forests for Reflex Paper.

The Wilderness Society Victoria will be targeting Reflex paper in a colourful, family friendly protest to raise awareness of the brand’s role in the destruction of Victoria’s native forests. The Leadbeater’s Possums will be dancing to Christmas music and holding a banner asking, “Please Reflex, protect our homes this Christmas.”

“Logging our forests to make cheap products like Reflex copy paper is threatening to wipe out many of our endangered native species, including Victoria’s faunal emblem, the Leadbeater’s possum,” said Wilderness Society campaigner Pia Perversi-Burchall.

“If Christmas is the season of giving, then Reflex Paper should be moving out of native forests and handing back the last homes of Victoria’s endangered species for permanent protection. Reflex should move its operations into plantations and stop woodchipping our native forests for paper,” Ms Perversi-Burchall said.

“Only 1% of the native forests of the Central Highlands have not been logged or burned,” said Victorian Campaigns Manager Luke Chamberlain. “With only 25 days left to Christmas, the challenge is there for Reflex Paper to stop robbing our wildlife of their homes and once and for all end the woodchipping of our forests.”

“If photocopy paper is on your office Christmas list, we encourage shoppers to choose for the environment and avoid buying Reflex paper,” Mr Chamberlain said.

Santa will be at the protest, canvassing the Christmas wishes of the Leadbeater’s Possums.
