Earlier this year The Wilderness Society Newcastle joined the Save the Williams River Coalition to campaign for the protection of the Williams River. According to a recent study “The Williams River has the most diverse and intact aquatic biotic communities in the Hunter Valley”.

At the NSW State election 2003, Bob Carr announced the protection of 65,00ha of icon forests in the state's north east. The decision marked a great victory for all those who campaigned hard for many years to ensure these incredible forests were safe for the future. Many thanks goes to all our members and supporters whose encouragement and help made this victory possible.

On May 4, 2005 the NSW government announced the protection of large chunks of the western woodlands. The decision will make a huge difference to the threatened Glossy Black Cockatoos, Rufous Bettongs and Barking Owls that rely on these last patches of bush in the cleared sea of NSW's central zone.

Some Australian icons bring together people from all walks of life! With the fate of Australia’s unique Travelling Stock Routes (TSR) Network in the balance, an alliance of drovers, graziers and conservation groups, including The Wilderness Society, has been formed to champion its long-term protection.
Thousands of people across NSW and the rest of Australia have written to the NSW government over the past month, demanding it take action to protect the River Red Gum Forests of the Murray region. Now, two new reports show that the logging is both uneconomic and in some areas, illegal.

The Wilderness Society has asked member for Balmain and State Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, Verity Firth, to listen to her own constituents and protect the River Red Gum Forests of the Murray region.
The Wilderness Society today welcomed the New South Wales Government’s plans to buy back water rights within the Murray-Darling Basin.
A sombre "funeral procession" organised by The Wilderness Society has today delivered a black coffin containing over 1000 postcards to the Lakemba office of the Premier to highlight the plight of the Red Gum forests of NSW.
