Wilderness Society Regrets Loss of Duncan Kerr’s State-Election Bid

The Wilderness Society today said that the loss of Duncan Kerr’s candidacy in the state election has eliminated the choice available to Labor voters who want to see oldgrowth forests protected.

“Duncan is the only member of the Tasmanian Parliamentary Labor Party to have publicly supported an end to oldgrowth logging,” said Campaign Coordinator Geoff Law. “We regret the scuttling of his state-election bid by Simon Crean and Jim Bacon.”

Mr Law said that the Lennon-Bacon alliance had once again stymied a move to curtail oldgrowth logging. They had previously ruled out protecting oldgrowth forests despite the recommendations of the Tasmania Together process.

“Mr Lennon and Mr Bacon seem hell-bent on preventing alternative points of view on oldgrowth forests from getting any foothold within the state Parliamentary Labor Party.”
