How you can help stop the pulp mill
So far the campaign to stop Gunns’ native-forest fed pulp mill has successfully delayed the project going ahead. This is because people like you have been active and standing up for the protection of our irreplaceable native forests and Tasmania’s clean green future.

Volunteer
The Wilderness Society is a grass-roots organisation dependent on the support of volunteers. If you are in Tasmania you can volunteer at our Hobart or Launceston campaign centre.
Go to our Tasmania volunteers page for more details. Otherwise let us know if you would like to volunteer to help stop the pulp mill at your nearest Wilderness Society Campaign centre.
Tasmanian Premier
The Tasmanian government should not support Gunns’ proposed pulp mill which will destroy more jobs than it will create, damage Tasmania’s clean-green reputation, pollute the marine environment, and destroy Tasmania’s most precious asset – its irreplaceable forests. Contact Tasmanian Premier David Bartlett and let him know why you want Tasmania’s future protected and Gunns’ pulp mill stopped.

Federal Environment Minister
Minister for Environment Peter Garrett still has to decide whether or not Gunns’ pulp mill can proceed. Minister Garrett has approved the building of the pulp mill but not its operation, and has asked for more research on the pulp mill’s impact on the marine environment from the dumping of 64,000 tonnes of toxic effluent per day.
Write to Minister Garrett and urge him to stop Gunns’ pulp mill.

Federal Climate Change Minister
Tasmania’s forests are a global treasure which should be protected for their value as a safe store of carbon, thereby protecting the atmosphere from polluting greenhouse gases. Tasmania’s forests are also crucial for wildlife, water catchments and as wild places for people to visit and enjoy.
The Federal Government hasn’t assessed the impact the pulp mill would have on native forest or climate change. Urge Climate Change Minister Penny Wong to conduct a climate change impact assessment of Gunns’ pulp mill.

Prime Minister
Write the Prime Minster Kevin Rudd and ask him to:
- Immediately protect Tasmania’s high conservation value and carbon rich forests
- Reject Gunns’ proposed pulp mill and any pulp mill that is not 100% plantation-based, totally chlorine-free and appropriately located
- Reject any proposal for wood-fired power generation in Australia, including Gunns’ proposed pulp mill. Gunns will burn 500, 000 tonnes of wood each year to power the proposed pulp mill and sell to national electricity markets as so-called renewable energy
