Caution: Woodside an Environmental Hazard

Today, community protestors declared Woodside an environmental hazard, using caution tape to cordon off the company’s Perth headquarters.

The action was prompted by yesterday’s reports that the Joint Venture partners for the Browse basin gas field have decided to progress site design for the location of a polluting industrial site at James Price Point, just north of Broome.

Coordinator, Renae Williams, said “Today we declare that Woodside is a serious environmental hazard to the dugong, turtles, humpback whales, corals and remnant rainforest of the Kimberley”.

“The proposed site for this polluting industry is in the middle of the world’s largest humpback whale nursery and breeding ground. It is home to threatened marine and terrestrial species, and is a haven for wildlife, all of which would be devastated by dredging, movement of shipping tankers, and blasting of coral reefs.”

“There are alternatives, and we call on Woodside and the government to withdraw support for a Kimberley industrial site, and look to locate this industry in the Pilbara where there is existing infrastructure.”
