Concert for the Kimberley

kimberley concert newAustralian music icons John Butler, Clare Bowditch and Missy Higgins are joining forces for CONCERT FOR THE KIMBERLEY – free, open-air show from 6.00pm, Friday 5 October at Melbourne's Federation Square.

What's so special about Western Australia's Kimberley region that it deserves this amazing concert? Well, the Kimberley has a lot to boast about – it's coastline constitutes a world-class marine wonderland and it's home to the world's largest Humpback Whale nursery, as well as threatened species including Snubfin Dolphins, Dugongs, Sawfish and Sea Turtles.

Along with the Kimberley's obvious conservation values is its important Indigenous culture significance. The area is home to numerous Aboriginal heritage sites including a famous Indigenous ‘songline’ – a continuous dreaming track that has remained intact for thousands of years.

Oh, and it's also an archeologists dream – you can find globally-significant dinosaur footprints in the Kimberley. Not bad eh?

But all of this is under threat.

Right now, a group of the world's biggest oil and gas companies have begun to clear the land around James Price Point on the Kimberley coast to make way for a gas factory 25 times the size of Melbourne's CBD.

CONCERT FOR THE KIMBERLEY aims to raise awareness about this important issue, and ARIA award-winner, John Butler, is happy to be doing his part. "The Kimberley is one my favourite places on this planet," he says."It's so pristine and dynamic – a rich and diverse countryside offering brilliant coastal blues alongside vivid red cliffs. It's culturally diverse and environmentally abundant, it's a rare and beautifully wild place".

"On all grounds, economically, environmentally, socially and politically, the proposed gas refinery at James Price Point is not sustainable. This is why I'm standing with my fellow citizens in Federation Square on Friday 5 October to sing out loud and proud that we will not allow one of the most precious places we have in our country to be destroyed by political and corporate greed."

Clare Bowditch is just as enthusiastic about the cause. "I believe passionately in protecting beauty that, once destroyed, can never be recreated. The Kimberley is one of those things, so when I was asked to help join the fight I jumped at the chance."

Also featuring renowned singer-songwriter Missy Higgins former Australian Greens leader Dr Bob Brown, CONCERT FOR THE KIMBERLEY is shaping up to be a Spring night in Melbourne to remember!
