TV ad opposing Kimberley industrial site

The Wilderness Society has combined with Traditional Owners and the local Kimberley community to produce a powerful 30 second TV ad.

It highlights the importance of the Kimberley environment and the threat of proposed industrialisation at James Price Point near Broome.

Filmed onsite and featuring Indigenous Traditional Owner Neil McKenzie, the 30 second ad is designed to encourage action and will be crucial in combating Government and industry ‘spin’ that presents the proposed development as a done deal.

The Kimberley oil spill and Ferguson's timebomb

Despite the grim warning of the recent Kimberley oil spill, the West Australian government, some members of the Federal Government (e.g. Resources Minister Martin Ferguson) and Woodside Petroleum want to build a huge, polluting ‘Kimberley gas hub’ at James Price Point on the Kimberley coast, 50km north of Broome.  This industrial site, which would process gas from the offshore Browse Basin, is a timebomb being pushed through with unseemly haste, even though there are other places – like the Pilbara region - which already have established industrial infrastructure.

Environmental Impacts and the alternatives

If the gas hub goes ahead on the Kimberley coast, the environmental impact will be devastating. There are many reasons why the LNG development should not go on the Kimberley coast. A large and growing number of Traditional Owners, people in the local community, our members and supporters, and Australians all over, don’t want this to happen to the Kimberley.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.  The Kimberley could have a bright future with many more sustainable jobs - including Indigenous jobs - in tourism, well managed fisheries and land management.
