What the Wilderness Society is doing to protect the Kimberley coast
The Kimberley coast is a special place, this page will inform you of some of the things we are doing to protect the outstanding natural values of the region.
- The community support for our Kimberley campaign continues to grow - with a fantastic music fundraiser in Fremantle recently.
- A new study by the Curtin University Sustainable Tourism Centre identifies plans for a massive polluting LNG industrial site near Broome as a serious threat to the Kimberley’s unique and globally-recognised tourism ‘brand’. You can read it here.
- Our Marine Community Campaigner, Jenita, recently returned from our 2010 Kimberley Whale Survey, with new areas surveyed and important information gathered.
- The Wilderness Society launched a TV advertising campaign opposing the James Price Point LNG proposal. We have received great support from the public and expanded the campaign - thank you!
- We are very concerned about the Woodside proposal to industrialise the Kimberley. Read our 10 reasons why the LNG plant should not go on the Kimberley coast and read about the James Price Point – A special part of the Kimberley coast threatened by fossil fuel (LNG) industry
- We are working to protect the humpback whales of the Kimberley - our international responsibility.

- We are also working to protect the other species under threat including the flatback turtles, corals and many other species.
- We are engaging in processes regarding marine protection and marine parks in the Kimberley, including the proposed Camden sound marine park.
- Thousands have also signed a pledge to protect the Kimberley’s irreplaceable environment pledging to not invest in Woodside or other companies that promote industrialization of the Kimberley coast and support peaceful action opposing industrialisation.
- The community has repeatedly protested Woodside involvement in the Kimberley gas proposal at Kimberley Consulate actions and other community events. See the Surf circle for sanctuaries album and the sandcastles for sanctuaries event.
- We have also organised or presented at a range of public meetings regarding the Kimberley and the proposed gas hub.

- The ‘Join the dots’ rally brought protesters together in Perth to spell out a message in human bodies ‘No Kimberley Gas Hub’.
- The Wilderness Society supported “The Walmadany Concert for Heritage” which took place on March 27 2009 and drew reported crowds of five thousand people from the town of Broome, which has a population of 15,000. The concert helped raise awareness of the Indigenous cultural impacts of the proposed development at Walmadany (James Price Point), and was at the invitation of Law Keeper and Custodian for Gollaraboolo heritage, Joeseph Roe.
- The major oil spill off the Kimberley coast has prompted us to organise community actions and submit to the commonwealth inquiry.
- The Wilderness Society continues to educate and take action to raise the profile of the Kimberley’s environment and address the threats including bauxite mining on the Mitchell Plateau and the link to proposed LNG processing, the Coral reefs of the Kimberley - a global treasure and the potential for heavy industry to destroy them, and the threat to the world’s largest population of Humpback whales. Read about our latest win regarding bauxite mining here.
- We are presenting an alternative vision for the Kimberley – a secure economic and cultural future without pollution heavy industry.
- We are working with the Wild Country Science Council to facilitate the scientific work that needs to be done to implement the alternative vision for the Kimberley.
- We are promoting a workshop regarding non violent direct action in the Kimberley
