WA Marine

West Australian marine

With over 40% of Australia's coastline spanning waters from the tropics through to cool temperate, Western Australia's marine environment is vast, remote and relatively undiscovered. This ancient and isolated seascape is unprotected and under threat due to Australia's energy boom. The Wilderness Society is working towards securing a network of marine protected areas across nearly 3 million km2 of marine waters and, if successful, Australia will have the largest marine sanctuaries on earth.

WOODSIDE Petroleum has again pushed back the final decision date for its proposed $30 billion Browse liquefied natural gas (LNG) project because it needs more time for work including engineering and design. The Australian Greens have called for the project to be moved to a more appropriate location, while the Wilderness Society said Browse Basin gas should be piped to the existing North West Shelf facilities at Karratha.

WA's Kimberley gets new marine park - April 19, 2012
Sydney Morning Herald/AAP

The biggest humpback whale calving area in the southern hemisphere will be protected within a new marine park to be created on the Kimberley coast by the West Australian government.
Conservation groups have welcomed the creation of the nearly 7000 sq km Camden Sound Marine Park, about 300km northeast of Broome, to be co-managed by traditional owners.
Wilderness Society
marine campaigner Jenita Enevoldsen said the park was recognition that the region's future lay in protecting its unique natural and cultural values, not in pursuing destructive industrial projects such Woodside Petroleum's proposed gas precinct 60km north of Broome.
