Forever Wild trip to the Murray - October 2011

Staff and supporters visit the mouth of the Murray River in South Australia.

On Tuesday 25th a group of Forever Wild members and supporters went with South Australian Campaign Manager, Peter Owen, and NSW campaigner Chris Daley, left the Adelaide campaign centre for an informative inspiring trip to Australia's largest estuary at the mouth of the mighty Murray River.

The blustery winds didn't deter everyone's enthusiasm as Peter explained the importance of the mouth of the river to the ecological sustainability of the river system in its entirety. We were also inspired the vast number of water birds and wildlife including majestic pelicans and even a couple of dragon lizards basking in the sun.

The group then went to a privately owned sanctuary, Tarni Warra, where the owners Richard and Christine Owen, walked us around their property where they have been lovingly restoring wetlands and indigenous plants back to their property that contains the only southern cluster of mangroves in the the area.

There were masses of birds and vibrant colours abound with the variety of different plants and ground coverings creating a truly magical space and we were all very humbled to have such an intimate time there.

We plan to have more of these exclusive insights into South Australian campaign hotspots, so to register your interest contact bequests@wilderness.org.au.
