ACT Campaign Chronology 1976 - 2001

1979 ACT Branch established to work for protection of Tasmanian wilderness and oppose the damming of the Franklin River.
Feb 1982 TWS shop and office opens.
Early 1980s ACT Branch hosts TWS National (Parliamentary) Liaison Office. Branch active in Franklin Dam High Court cases, major fundraising events, book launches (Bob Connolly's book launched by Gough Whitlam, and attended by half the Parliamentary Press Gallery), Federal Election campaigns, national media and political lobbying.
1988 TWS ACT Branch resurgence, with public education and advocacy campaigns on Kakadu, Tasmanian and SE NSW forests.
1989 Forest rescue activity begins in SE NSW forests - Coolangubra wilderness, Tantawangalo. Thousands attend 'Forests for the Future' rally, and many camp outside Parliament House in Canberra. Shop and office move and expansion. Employed our first paid campaigner.
1990 Huge 'Dance till Dawn' Dance-a-thon fundraiser; inaugural 'Wilderness Week'; 'Forest Embassy' (Parliament House). Conduct Federal Election campaign in Eden-Monaro electorate.
1991 Another shop move with further expansion. NSW SE forests campaign continues including Eden chipmill action.
1994 Forest Rescue in Croobyar State Forest stops impending logging. 'Forest Embassy' held at Parliament House.
1995 Forests become a huge political and election issue. Logging industry 'blockades' Parliament House. Massive swing against Labor in Canberra by-election.
1996 Federal election - issue-raising campaign. RFA process commences in Eden and Southern forest areas.
1998 Canberra shop closes. National Campaign Office moves to Canberra. Eden RFA decision - 67,000ha of forest protected.
2000 Southern Forests decision - 324,000ha of coastal and escarpment forest protected.
2001 Forest rescues commence in high conservation forests in southern NSW that remain unprotected, including Badja and Monga.
