The proposed Tillegra Dam will negatively impact on the Hunter River Estuary, its Ramsar wetlands and migratory shorebirds. The many native species who call this unspoiled habitat home will also be affected. Not only will the dam destroy a pristine ecosystem, but it will also contribute to global warming through producing increased carbon emissions.
This dam is completely unnecessary to meet the water needs of this area at present or into the future. The Lower Hunter is the only urban region in Australia without water restrictions. Current water storage is extremely healthy. The volume of water that would be stored in Tillegra Dam would give an absurd and unnecessary level of water supply—at the cost of ruining an irreplaceable ecosystem and habitat.
