NSW During the mid 80s - early 90s TWS had branches in Sydney, North Sydney, Western Sydney, Bennelong, Tweed Heads, Newcastle, Armidale, Illawarra, Central West, Blue Mountains, Tamworth, Taree, Monaro and Albury.

 

1976 - 1983 South-West Tasmania Committee (NSW) formed 1974, later becomes the Tasmanian Wilderness Society (NSW). Franklin campaign. Biggest conservation rallies in NSW history in 1982 and 1983. NSW had 45 branches and 13 shops during early 1983!
1984 - 1987 Campaign for NSW Wilderness Act. Sydney works in 1984 Senate election.
1987 NSW Wilderness Act passed. 'Vote for the Forests' marginal electorate Federal Election campaign.
1988 - 1992 Major campaigns on Tasmania's tall forests, NSW northern and southern coastal and escarpment forests, Kakadu, global tropical rainforests. Over 1,300 activists arrested during SE forests rescue campaign. More than 11,000 people rally in cities. 15 wilderness nominations developed and advocated.
1990 'Vote for the Environment' marginal electorate Federal Election campaign.
1991 Court decision stops logging in Chaelundi State Forest.
1992 Kakadu Stage 3 placed on World Heritage list. Federal Resource Security Legislation defeated. 2,000 Submissions to NPWS call for protection of 12 identified wilderness areas.
1993 Long Hot Summer campaign targets threatened forests in Tasmania. NSW Campaign Centres send activists.
1994 NSW Government passes its own resource security legislation - NSW Timber Industry (Interim Protection) Act. Premier Fahey announces 113,000ha of identified wilderness will be gazetted under Wilderness Act. Massive community mobilisation attempts to influence Keating Government woodchip licence decision. Successful Croobyar forest blockade.
1995 Huge forest rallies in Sydney and Newcastle. 2,000 people attend Sydney public meeting on forests. Marginal seat campaign helps elect Carr Labor Government. Successful Styx forest (NE NSW) and Barrington Tops blockades.
1996 Carr announces 12 new wilderness areas and 10 new national parks (153,000ha) following huge community campaign and 12,000 wilderness protection submissions.
1997 Sydney Branch commences Hinchinbrook campaign.
1998 Eden Regional Forest Agreement (RFA) protects 67,000ha in SE NSW. NE RFA decision a disaster for old growth and wilderness forest protection. Draconian 'Forestry and National Park Estate Bill' introduced.
1999 Wollemi wilderness, 361,000ha protected. Newcastle City Council, Manly Council and Byron Shire Councils stop commercial links with Boral. Sydney Branch commences Great Barrier Reef campaign.
2000 Southern Forest decision protects 325,000ha of coastal, escarpment and western slopes forests and woodlands. Pilliga and Goonoo State Forests saved from charcoal development. Sydney Campaign Centre launches campaign to halt plans to burn native forests to generate electricity.
2001 4,800ha Stockton Bight dune system protected. TWS and other wilderness groups gain 20,000 submissions supporting Wilderness 2000 Protection Plan. Badja Forest Rescue launched.
