Alarm bells for a River Murray still in grave danger - February 03, 2012

AUSTRALIA'S leading environmental groups warned yesterday that a ''once in a century'' change to save the River Murray is at risk if politicians did not work together to secure reform. The Murray-Darling Basin Authority in November delivered a draft plan that would return 2750 billion litres a year to the system. Wilderness Society SA campaign manager Peter Owen said now was the last chance to fix the plan and warned of a return to the catastrophic scenes of recent years without decisive action.

Tony Burke: man in the hot seat - February 04, 2012

SWIRLING around the remote islands of King Sound on the Buccaneer Archipelago, powerful 12m tides create the Kimberley coastline's horizontal waterfalls, dotting the waters with perilous whirlpools that can sink the foolhardy and the unprepared. The region is a favourite place for federal Environment Minister Tony Burke, who last year declared the west Kimberley a National Heritage area. Burke is confident the next 12 months will be his time of delivery. It will, he hopes, provide an environmental legacy for the nation and a personal legacy for his time in the environment portfolio. But some fear he has too much on his plate. "It is a big program and this stuff is getting more complex, not less," national campaign director for the Wilderness Society Lyndon Schneiders says.

Big irrigator profits destroying the Murray River - February 01, 2012

Record profits of over $8 billion announced by “big irrigation” come at a huge cost to the environment and to the people of South Australia, who depend on a healthy Murray River, said the Wilderness Society.
