Where do the parties stand?

Queensland's spectacular natural environment makes our state a great place to live. Swimming in pristine rivers, snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, walking through towering forests, having family fun on the beach, and exploring remote Cape York Peninsula – no wonder Queensland's environment is the envy of the world.

Tragically, many of Queensland's special natural places and wildlife are still under threat. With the stroke of a pen, Queensland's next government could open up our forests and woodlands to logging and land clearing, tear up laws to protect wild rivers and abandon plans to nominate Cape York for World Heritage listing.

In the lead up to the Queensland state election, all political parties need to promise that they will commit to Queensland's top 5 environmental priorities:

  1. Safeguard our forests and control landclearing

  2. Preserve our unique wild rivers

  3. Apply strong environmental controls on mining development

  4. World Heritage protection for Cape York Peninsula

  5. Save our marine life from overfishing

As the election campaign draws near, we'll keep you up-to-date on this page about where the parties stand on these crucial issues.

Early assessment of Labor and Liberal-National Party

We've already completed an early assessment of the environmental policies of Labor and the Liberal-National Party with other Queensland conservation groups. You can download the full pdf assessment here.

To summarise our findings:

  • Labor currently has a number of positive environmental programs, but on some issues such as controlling dangerous coal seam gas and coal mining industries, they are seriously failing.
  • The Liberal-National Party refused to respond to our survey for the assessment, deciding instead to duck and weave on the environment. In the meantime, we only have past positions and statements to judge them on, which are not encouraging at all and include a wind back of many of Queensland's important environmental laws.
