Take Action Now to protect this global treasure in our backyard

At the Western Australian election in August last year, newly appointed Liberal Premier Colin Barnett promised his government will provide up to $3.8 million over four years to better manage and protect WA’s Great Western Woodlands.
The Barnett government will “Work with Indigenous communities, the scientific community, conservation groups and industry to develop a biodiversity conservation strategy for the Great Western Woodlands'.
Since then a government-appointed Great Western Woodlands project manager, Mr. Ian Herford from the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), has been assigned to write the biodiversity conservation strategy.
This is the first step towards adequate protection of the Great Western Woodlands, however, a biodiversity conservation strategy must ensure;
- that scientifically identified areas of outstanding natural and cultural importance are fully protected;
- An appropriate legislative model is in place that protects the natural and cultural values of the entire Great Western Woodlands;
- Ensure the development of a substantial GWW Indigenous Rangers program so that local Traditional Owners and communities are involved in and benefit from the improved management of their traditional lands.
