Event a success!: 100’s turn out in Perth to oppose Kimberley site for LNG gas hub
Almost two hundred people gathered on the Perth foreshore to spell out a giant human message to the Government, Woodside and joint venture partners, about plans to build a gas processing site at James Price Point, north of Broome. The human message, created by protesters wearing red t-shirts, said, “NO KIMBERLEY GAS HUB”, and was clearly visible from above.

Large scale industrial development of the Kimberley, including a proposed gas hub 50km north of Broome at James Price Point (photo attached), threatens to pollute and fragment the fragile beauty of the Kimberley – and impact on the area’s amazing wildlife including humpback whales, dugong, turtle and the rare snubfin dolphin (found only in northern Australia).
The Wilderness Society WA Kimberley Campaigner Josh Coates said “Today’s human message demonstrates that the West Australian community cares about the iconic Kimberley region and will not stand by and watch it destroyed for no good reason.
“There are alternatives to processing gas on the sensitive Kimberley coast - sites with established industrial infrastructure such as Port Hedland and also floating LNG technology.”
“There have been reports on the back of a preliminary agreement with some Traditional Owners that this is a done deal, it is not. The agreement is subject to environmental and cultural studies and the normal environmental approvals process under the EP and EPBC Acts.”
The Wilderness Society would like to thank theother organisations that helped promote the event - The Conservation Council of WA, Environs Kimberley and Save The Kimberley - and special thanks to the many volenteers, staff and participants who make this event possible.
