For the past two years Broome locals, conservation volunteers, scientists and environmentalists have been teaming together to conduct a daily survey of Humpback Whales from a land-based view point at James Price Point (40km north of Broome). The research project is part of the Broome Community's No Gas Campaign against the proposed LNG precinct at James Price Point.
The survey being conducted is crucial to an understanding of whale migrations up the Kimberley coast and is research that has been poorly conducted by the environmental team from Woodside. Their researchers claim that whales don't come that close to the coast or calve at the proposed location of the gas hub. Last year this was proven to be incorrect but the survey needs to be repeated to be scientifically accurate so we can use it to prove the 'research' conducted by Woodside to be wrong.
The cost of such an important scientific survey is high and the community has been running it based solely on donation. Some concerned community members are hoping to raise much needed funds for them by putting on a gig with some great local bands at Mojos in Fremantle. It will be a great night and all proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to funding the whale survey.
So please come along, show your support and help them help the Broome Community No Gas Campaign. If you want to help out by putting up posters or handing out some fliers for the gig click here.
