Woodside decision on floating LNG shows way forward for Kimberley -
Message to shareholders at Woodside AGM tomorrow
Today, Woodside CEO Don Voelte, announced that the company’s Greater Sunrise LNG (liquefied natural gas) project, in the Timor Sea, would be developed using floating LNG technology, while providing social investment, employment and training opportunities for Timor-Leste (East Timor).
The announcement opens the door for the Browse Basin gas project, off the Kimberley coast, to also utilise floating LNG technology, and in doing so protect one of the least impacted coastlines left in the world AND provide economic benefits to the Kimberley region.
In response to Woodside’s announcement, The Wilderness Society WA and Conservation Council of WA today called for the Kimberley coast LNG industrial site to be abandoned, and for the companies involved to pursue floating LNG technology.
“At Woodside’s Annual General Meeting, to be held tomorrow in Perth, we will be encouraging shareholders to tell their Directors: ‘If floating LNG is ok for the Sunrise project, it is ok for Browse’, said The Wilderness Society’s State Coordinator, Peter Robertson.
