The Nature Conservancy measures success in The Great Western Woodlands

The Nature Conservancy (‘TNC’) held an epic 2-day workshop during August in Kalgoorlie, located on the northern border of The Great Western Woodlands.

The gathering saw 22 scientists from all over the globe come together, including representatives from the Department of Environment and Conservation in Kalgoorlie, research institutions and eight different environmental organizations. The workshop looked at  improving the mechanisms through which we assess how effectively conservation programs in the Great Western Woodlands are protecting natural and cultural assets.

The Nature Conservancy is also responsible for developing the management tool Conservation Action Planning (‘CAP’) that is used for planning and implementing conservation projects across the globe. We have been working together and using this tool for the Great Western Woodlands. Conservation Action Planning: Managing the Future of the Great Western Woodlands

The workshop also aided in strengthening the use of measures within the GondwanaLink project, of which the Great Western Woodlands forms an integral end of the link.

No event is complete without a function and field trip. Locals with a wide variety of backgrounds (including miners, the Goldfields Land and Sea Council, the Kalgoorlie Boulder Urban Landcare Group and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder) came to meet with the scientists in a social setting.  Thanks to all who attended the dinner at The School of Mines, it was a great get together that was enjoyed all.

A big thank you needs to go out to Jim and Andrea Williams, who took the group to Widgimooltha on a field trip - we learnt much about the history of this incredible landscape

The workshop was very successful and provided an important networking opportunity for all involved.
