For World Turtle Day in 2012, hundreds of people from around Australia hit their local beaches in support of more protection for our sea turtles feeding and breeding grounds across Northern Australia's seas.

Events to build sand turtles were held in Perth, Melbourne, Darwin, Cairns, the Gold Coast, Newcastle & central NSW coast - to raise awareness of our endangered sea turtles and send a strong message to our Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke that we need more marine sanctuaries across northern Australia.

"Australia is home to six out of the worlds seven turtle species, including many internationally important nesting sites", said Jenita Enevoldsen - Marine Campaigner for The Wilderness Society.

"Our environment Minister has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver real marine protection to the most intact tropical ecosystems on our planet"

"The draft plans of the North-West & North marine protection cover mostly abyssal plain and fail to protect areas in Western Australia like Ningaloo, the Rowley Shoals, northern Kimberley. Limmen Bight in the Northern territory also needs more protection", said Jess Abrahams - Northern Marine Campaigner for The Australian Marine Conservation Society.

World Turtle Day Winner

There were some amazing sand turlte creations made last weekend, but the winner of the James Price Point photographic book goes to Phillip StClair from Sunnybank Hills in QLD for his efforts organizing the Gold Coast event at Labrador and the very creative "active laying" sand turtle which can be seen in this video.

Thanks to all those who participated in World Turtle Day 2012, to show our gratitude please download a free poster of all of the sand turtles from around Australia.
