Statement from the Wilderness Society
Statement from the Wilderness Society
The recent allegations made on Facebook about an apparent incident at two Tasmanian sawmills must be investigated by Tasmania Police.
Serious allegations of this nature need to be referred to authorities for an independent investigation.
There is an unfortunate history of false, dangerous and irresponsible claims made about forest protestors in Tasmania. Previous allegations of this nature were proven to be a hoax and resulted in an apology to environment groups.
The Wilderness Society supports nonviolent direct action to protect forests from logging, and in no way supports or condones the sort of activities that have been alleged to have occurred. A fundamental aspect of nonviolent philosophy is the safety of all parties. The right to peaceful protest must be upheld by all stakeholders in the Tasmanian forest debate.
