Your environment, your future, your vote!

The Wilderness Society Archive - This page is over one year old. Links and content may no longer be accurate.

The Wilderness Society has released our final election scorecard which grades the major parties on their environmental priorities to inform your vote for the environment this Saturday, August 21.

Our environment is our future and we need need clear, positive policies to protect our native forests, our unique natural ecosystems and marine environments, and iconic places like the Kimberley and Cape York. Protecting our natural world is critical if we are to fight dangerous climate change. Even simple solutions like protecting our native forests, which are huge ‘carbon banks’, have been ignored by both major political parties.

We need national leaders who won’t go missing in action when it comes to these and other important National Environment Policies. The Federal Government has a critical role to play in securing and sustaining our Nation’s natural heritage and resources.

Our final assessment shows that:

  • The Greens’ policies remain very strong across a range of environmental areas and they have improved their rating on Indigenous Conservation with an important new policy and funding commitments.
  • Labor’s position on the environment is not very good overall, lacking leadership and positive policies in some areas, but with some moderately good policies in others.
  • The Liberal-National Coalition’s policies have rated poorly, with a number of negative positions that threaten to take environmental protections backwards. Their latest announcements on marine conservation received a fail mark.
