Western Australia

We're a collective of curious, nature-loving and ready-to-go people and we're inviting you to join us to help celebrate and support life here in WA.

We're calling for the protection of the Jarrah forests in the south west of Western Australia. These have evolved over many millennia, adapting to a changing climate, rainfall and fire behaviour. 80% of the 8,000 species of animals and plants in the Jarrah are found nowhere else in the world. But it's all under threat. As the planet warms the forests are struggling to survive, while at the same time they are being strip mined. The Northern Jarrah Forests can't take any more.

In the Kimberley, the Wilderness Society is proud to be the inaugural partner of the Martuwarra River Keepers. The Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council formed the River Keepers in response to a growing number of threats to the Kimberley region. These include large-scale water extraction, gas fracking, degradation of Country, lack of River management, and the impacts of climate change, such as flooding and soaring temperatures.

For the Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council, representing Traditional Custodians from Bunuba, Gooniyandi, Nyikina, Wangkatjunka and Walmajarri groups, Martuwarra is a living, ancestral being.

Training opportunities

Our community organising program is all about immersing yourself in an incredible learning and development experience so that collectively we can better protect, promote and restore wilderness across Australia.

Volunteering opportunities

Volunteering with The Wilderness Society is an incredibly rewarding experience. We have a number of roles within our campaign centre here in Perth—whether it’s communications, graphic design or community engagement.

If you’ve got a skill you’d like to share as a volunteer—or even if you’re not sure where to start but you’re keen to get involved—then get in touch; we’d love to hear from you!

Please email us at [email protected] to express your volunteer interest and we’ll find the right role for you.

Local Community Groups

The Wilderness Society works with Local Community Groups around the Perth metropolitan area. These Groups are a powerful way of connecting community members so they can take action on environmental issues in a meaningful way. Together we are empowering our communities, creating local leaders and building effective teams to create the solutions we need for nature. Please email us at [email protected] to express your interest, or sign up here.

Get wild!

Throughout the year we hold a number of events where you'll get to experience, in person, our beautiful wild places. Follow us on Facebook to be kept up-to-date on these events!
