After years of assessments, the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has—again—made a recommendation against mining the Helena Aurora Range (Bungalbin).
This means that the EPA has told the state government that mining the range is environmentally unacceptable and, with species found nowhere else on earth, it should be protected. However, this does not guarantee that the range will be protected.
While the EPA has made the recommendation, at the end of the day, the Minister for the Environment has the final call on whether or not to allow mining to go ahead and holds the power to protect the range forever.
This is the first major test for the new government and will demonstrate their respect for the EPA's recommendations, advice from the scientific community and public environmental concerns.
Currently, the Minister is being lobbied hard by the mining company Mineral Resources Ltd—which has plans to destroy much of the range for new iron ore mines.
It’s vital he gets encouragement to act from us, the community, to follow the EPA’s recommendations.
Please send the Environment Minister, Hon. Stephen Dawson MLC, a message of support to follow the EPA’s advice and protect the unique Helena Aurora Range from mining forever as a National Park.
