Protection not destruction: Lutruwita / Tasmania’s native forests worth more than cheap politics

The Wilderness Society stood with the wider environment movement and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre in opposing this dangerous threat to the forests.

The Tasmanian Liberal party has announced that, if elected, it will give 40,000 hectares of pristine native forest to logging.

The Wilderness Society stands to protect forests across Lutruwita / Tasmania, including all of the high conservation value forests that were intended to be reserved over a decade ago.

Today, the Wilderness Society stood with the wider environment movement and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre in opposing this dangerous threat to the forests.

To promise 40,000ha of as yet unidentified, high conservation value forest to the logging industry is out of touch with community expectations. Even the industry has come out against the Liberals’ proposal.

Alice Hardinge, Acting Campaigns Manager for the Wilderness Society, said, “We are unsurprised by the Liberal party’s announcement today. And it’s disappointing to see this political race to the bottom of environmental destruction. Tasmanians deserve to be represented by a Parliament that cares about Lutruwita / Tasmania’s precious forests, communities, and the future.”
