Statement: Retirement of Senator Janet Rice

The Wilderness Society would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Janet Rice, who has announced she will retire as a Greens Senator in 2024, ten years after she was first elected.

Janet has been tirelessly committed to the natural environment throughout her career. Her determined advocacy for nature—particularly for forests—has been clear and consistent. Janet’s dedication to speaking in the federal parliament for the need to protect unique ecosystems has been second to none.

As such, Janet has been a formidable presence at the forefront of a very small cohort of Australian politicians who prioritise the protection of natural places. In particular she has been a dedicated defender of Victoria’s unique natural environment. The Wilderness Society acknowledges the enormous contribution Janet has made over the last decade as a Senator, and wishes Janet well in her future endeavours.
