Position Description

Do you want to help drive real change for our environment?

An experienced journalist or communications expert is required to raise the profile of environmental issues and campaigns for a coalition of leading not‐for‐profit conservation organisations: Environment Victoria, Friends of the Earth, the Wilderness Society and the Victorian National Parks Association.

As the state’s leading environment groups, we work on the most urgent environmental issues including climate change, water and river health, protecting our forests and biodiversity, and helping people live sustainably.

Our organisations generate and respond to thousands of media stories each year, and we need your help to coordinate our media activities.

This position is shared between the four leading environment groups and your work will be guided by a steering committee made up of a senior representative from each group.

You would be employed by Environment Victoria (on behalf of the four groups) and report to its CEO.

You would be based in Environment Victoria’s office in the award‐winning 60L Green Building in Carlton, Victoria.

This is a full‐time, fixed‐term contract of 12 months.

Remuneration is at EV4 level with a starting salary of $55,000 to $63,000 plus superannuation and leave benefits.

Key tasks

  • Identify media opportunities to generate favourable media attention for our campaigns and programs;
  • Liaise with and market stories to the media;
  • Assist staff develop media plans and draft media releases, opinion pieces and letters to the editor;
  • Provide media coaching to staff and strategic partner organisations;
  • Develop any necessary systems to support media efforts, eg. media monitoring, high quality media materials;
  • Arrange for the correct coalition organisation to undertake media on their issue
  • Undertake other writing tasks as assigned;
  • Undertake tasks as directed by the Green Media Steering Committee and the Environment Victoria Chief Executive Officer.

Performance measures

  • Regular coverage of our campaigns and programs in print, radio and television;
  • Daily monitoring of media for opportunities to advance our objectives;
  • Development of effective and strategic media messages for campaigns and programs. Key selection criteria

Please address the following selection criteria in your application:

1. Media experience: thorough knowledge of how the media operates, including metropolitan and regional media networks, and proven ability to generate media stories;

2. Responsive: ability to respond quickly and calmly to media issues to ensure that environment groups views are covered in the media;

3. Sound skills: excellent written and oral communications skills and sound computer, internet and email skills;

4. Time management: ability to deliver simultaneous projects within tight timelines;

5. Environmental commitment: Demonstrated enthusiasm for environment issues and a commitment to achieving change (desirable)

Reporting

The incumbent will report to the Chief Executive Officer, Environment Victoria.

Terms and Conditions

The position is full time for a fixed term contract of 12 months. Remuneration is at EV4 level with a starting salary of $55,000 to $63,000 plus superannuation and leave benefits. Remuneration to be negotiated based on the extent of the applicants experience and increased remuneration will be considered or the right candidate.

Environment Victoria staff are required to undertake job responsibilities in a manner consistent with OH&S, EEO and AA policies and procedures.

Travel in Victoria and Australia may occasionally be required. A current driver’s licence is required.
