Marine Conservation Community Campaigner (WA)

The Wilderness Society WA (TWSWA) invites applications for the position of Marine Conservation Community Campaigner.

The role of the Marine Conservation Community Campaigner is to co-ordinate the TWSWA community engagement program focusing on the protection of WA’s unique marine and coastal environment and assist with the coordination of TWSWA volunteers. The position is 4 days/week for 1 year (with likely extension) and Perth-based with some travel.  Applications close COB 16th July 2009.

The Position

Job Title: The Wilderness Society WA Marine Community Campaigner
Location: The Wilderness Society’s Campaign Centre in West Perth
Salary: $45,000 - $48,000 p.a. pro-rata
Hours: 0.8 FTE or 4 days per week (30 hours per week, including 1 weekend day when required)
Conditions of employment: As set out in The Wilderness Society employment agreement
Period: Initial one year contract, with an additional one year extension subject to funding.

The purpose of the WA Marine Community Campaigner is to lead the community engagement and volunteer coordination components of the TWS WA marine campaign.

This successful applicant will work as an integral part of the TWS WA marine campaign team.

The WA Marine Community Campaigner will work from our West Perth Campaign Centre but regularly undertake activities in different locations throughout Perth - and sometimes beyond. The successful applicant will need to have a driver’s license and be able to access private transport.

The position will work in close collaboration with The Wilderness Society’s WA Senior Marine Campaigner, other campaign staff and the WA Wilderness Collective. The position is accountable through the Senior Marine Campaigner to the Wilderness Society WA’s Management Committee.

Primary tasks and responsibilities;
• Work as part of the TWS WA marine campaign team to plan activities for marine conservation campaigns which involve our supporters and members and contribute to the success of our WildCountry vision;
• Lead in organising and coordinating the community engagement and volunteer coordination components of the marine campaign, including helping with organisation of the Wilderness Action Collective in Perth;and recruitment and training of volunteers and activists;
• Ensure TWS WA is engaged regularly and effectively with the wider community through a program of information stalls and displays, presentations, public meetings, peaceful and creative protests and other campaign events as required;
• To maintain and build on the Wilderness Society WA’s wide network of contacts with a diverse array of like-minded community organisations;
• Maintain a good working knowledge of conservation issues in the State, and in particular those that relate to the protection of marine wilderness and wildlife;
• Assist the Senior Marine Campaigner with day to day duties in the office such as responding to requests for information and database maintenance;
• Provide regular reports to the Wilderness Society WA
Management Committee and attend relevant meetings and workshops as appropriate.

Secondary tasks and responsibilities;
• Provide support for The Wilderness Society’s fundraising activities;
• Assist in the development of quality communications materials such as reports, brochures and articles for the internet;
• Assist in liaising with the media, politicians and other key decision-makers;
• Participate in other Wilderness Society activities as required.

Essential selection criteria
1.    Demonstrated enthusiasm for environmental campaigns and grassroots activism and a commitment to achieving change;
2.    Experience in coordinating and inspiring people and working with volunteer committees;
3.    Experience in working/volunteering with non-government organisations/campaigns;
4.    Demonstrated ability to balance a demanding workload and set priorities;
5.    Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team;
6.    Effective written and oral communication skills;
7.    Basic computer skills and web literacy;
8.    Have a driver’s license and own a car or have the capacity to access one.

Desirable selection criteria
1.    A good understanding of political processes and how the media works.
2.    Interest or knowledge in the marine environment and marine conservation.
