The Wilderness Society supports the campaign to change the date of Australia Day

Updated:

Over many years, The Wilderness Society has worked closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and leaders, in support of the protection of the natural and cultural heritage of this ancient continent.

We share the perspective of many Australians that the celebration of Australia Day on 26 January is not appropriate given that this date commemorates the invasion of Australia and the start of a process of forced dispossession of homelands and attacks on traditional culture.

The Wilderness Society supports a national day of celebration that can be enjoyed by all Australians from all backgrounds and walks of life.
